THE HISTORY of TOMAR
I have been involved 'in dogs' since my senior year in college, 1969, when I purchased my first 'show dog', a Borzoi puppy from the Baronoff Kennels of Kay and Mac McCluskey. Kay became my mentor, so I was off to a wonderful start. That puppy grew up to be my first champion - Ch. Amara's Thunder of Baronoff . Hounds were my original breeds of choice and carried my Amara prefix. After teaching for 3 years I decided that dogs were my true vocation. So I became a licensed assistant to a top professional handler and then manager of Mrs. Alden V. Keene's kennels - the famous Round Table. It was also during my Round Table years that my friendship with Midge Martin began. The catalyst of that friendship was a wirehair dachshund puppy named Sausage, soon to be Ch. Kaihorn Battle-Ax.
On the other hand, Tom was not what you would call a dog person! But, once married into it has held up remarkably well. He is the driver, crate carrier, poop scooper, errand runner and all around cheerleader. He has really taken to the hounds and considers them 'his' dogs!
After getting married, we changed the kennel name to TOMAR and concentrated on toy breeds and Poodles. Then one day 13 years ago, Midge, having married Don and moved to Chicago and changed her kennel name to FULL CIRCLE, called to tell me she had a male wire puppy I really needed to have. This puppy from her 2nd contemporary wire litter turned out to be Ch. Solo Seafarer's last son. Harley immediately won everyone's heart the minute he stepped out of the crate when we got him home from the airport. Tom, who wasn't all that thrilled by Chihuahuas or Poodles, was completely won over by these wonderful, fuzzy faced hounds. So began the very successful partnership between Full Circle and Tomar that continues to this day and now includes Beagles.
We have always operated on a small scale. Puppies are born in the bedroom and raised in the family room. Even though our breeding and showing has been on a limited basis it has been rewarding. We have owned or bred top producers, specialty winners and many champions in their respective breeds. The intent has always been on quality not quantity. Our dogs are members of our family and temperament is paramount here.
The WIREHAIR DACHSHUNDS are and always will be our first love. Harley was the start of it all. He grew up to be Ch. Solo Full Circle Harbor Hawk,. He was a wonderful sire with 7 champion get in a very few litters and more to come. Although he is gone, his last 2 daughters are making their mark right now. Ch. Full Circle Sailor's Dream W (Amber) has joined the list of his Champion Kids and is already a Group Winner. Ambers sister Ch. Tomar Point Breeze W (Breeze) finished in Nov '05 after a short but exciting show career. We finished his son Ch. Tomar Full Circle Schooner W (Stewie) who had variety wins over Specials from the Bred By class! And his brown boar daughter Ch. Tomar Sailor's Delight W (Harpy). Over last winter Ch. Full Circle Ensign's Lanyard W (Lanny) came to live with us when his owner unexpectedly passed away. Lanny was bred by Midge so he is family and fit right in like he had always lived here! He is a delightful dog and his first puppies - Tomar Master and Commander (Russell) and Tomar Harbor Lights (Emma) look very promising. Of course their mother is a Harley daughter so they are Harley's first grand children!
BEAGLES are back! Our newest additions are a step back in time. Two years ago Wildhart White Tie Affair arrived from Illinois. He won his first 2 points at Pocono Mt. KC. Chardon Title Shot (Rose) presented us with our 1st Beagle litter in 30 years. She has 4 puppies sired by Earl. Rose was soon joined by her younger sister Chardon Athenian Gold, (Iris) Then there is Earl! Midge went to a show and saw this marvelous puppy with Iris and Rose's breeder Chuck Kitchell. It was love at first sight and Midge bought him on the spot. What a smart move! Earl proceeded to finish, becoming Ch. Chardon Early Leader, with 2 four and 2 five point majors and a Group 4 - all from the puppy class. Our newest edition is a daughter of the multiple Best In Show winning Ch. Torqay Central Station who will be arriving soon!
After about 10 years away from the MINIATURE POODLE ring (but not away from poodles!) our homebred cream Tomar JLC Romantica (Roma) finished with 3 majors and a group placing. She was shown by her co owner Jordan Chamberlain, who also owns her top producing sire. Roma is sired by Ch. Dorian's JLC Capote out of an Excaliber grand daughter. Roma's kids have exceeded our expectations. At his first show, her son, Tomar JLC First Impression (Ren) won the variety from the puppy class. We expect great things from this lovely young dog. His sister, Ch. Tomar JLC Perfect Romance finished in 12 shows and is now the proud mother of 6 babies.
Although we now concentrate on our hounds and the occasional miniature poodle there have been many TOMAR champions in the past. Our long coat Chihuahuas: the English import Ch. Sudajac's Father Xmas of Brujay and Tomar Sadie Pretty Lady were both top producers. Ch. Chargi's Wigible, who I co owned with my friend and handler the late Lew Grello, is a top producing Chinese Crested with several group winning kids to his credit. Ch. Tomar Excaliber, an apricot miniature poodle was also the sire of the group winning Ch. Barclay's Lyca High Cotton. Ch JLC Jondelyn, our black mini was Best Bred by Mini at the Poodle Club of America National Specialty shown by her co owner Jordan Chamberlain. Many of our Chihuahuas were Specialty winners - Ch.Tomar Peterbuilt, Ch. Round Table Tomar Hi Jinx, Ch Tomar Uptown Girl, Ch. Tomar Rising Sun, Ch. Tomar JC Vampira to name a few.
These and our current dogs can be seen in our Photo Album.
